TEA TREE | melaleuca alternifolia
Like Lavender and Peppermint, Tea Tree is one of the most versatile and most researched essential oils.
Tea Tree essential oil has been proven in countless studies to be a powerful immune stimulant, effective in fighting all three types of infection: bacterial, viral, and fungal, which makes this a unique and distinct powerhouse in the world of health care, and particularly the genre of essential oils.
BACKGROUND
There are around 300 different species of Tea Tree - native to Australia. It was used as a general antiseptic by the aborigine tribes for thousands of years. Stories are told of a magical lagoon into which tea tree leaves had fallen, where the local tribe bathed in the naturally created bath.
In 1923 an Australian government scientist, Dr. A. R. Penfold, conducted a study of Tea Tree essential oil and discovered it to be 12 times stronger as an antiseptic bactericide than carbolic acid (the current standard).
Tea Tree became recognized, according to the British Medical Journal in 1933, as “a powerful disinfectant, non-poisonous and non-irritating”. Among the essential oils valued for their anti-infectious properties, Tea Tree has few rivals.
Unlike antibiotics which kill bacteria indiscriminately, Tea Tree targets only harmful bacteria while leaving beneficial bacteria intact.
And also unlike antibiotics, which have no efficacy against viral and fungal infections, Tea Tree can effectively fight both, in addition to bacteria.
Tea Tree essential oil is excellent for quickly clearing up a sore throat, infections, colds, flu, cystitis, sinusitis, as well as fungal infections of all sorts – athlete’s foot, thrush, mouth ulcers, systemic candidiasis, and vaginal yeast infections.
When diffused it is an excellent oil for relief from congested nasal and respiratory passages, as well as fortifying the emotional body.
In general, Tea Tree is useful with any chronic condition – skin issues, respiratory conditions, urinary tract infections, digestive infections, hormonal issues, joint trouble, or
even psychological problems.
Dr. Daniel Pénoël’s Tea Tree Lick (see Applications) can be used to target sore throat infections, while the digestive system is receiving its disinfecting benefits as well.
For occasions when antibiotics may be considered necessary, Tea Tree use will significantly lower the risk of fungal infection; reduce negative side effects, and aid healing.
Tea Tree is a powerful aid to healing skin infections or wounds. Apply directly on location topically. It is a good infection fighter with children and adults alike. As noted above, it’s a powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal oil and yet is safe for all ages.
These days, with the rich legacy of Tea Tree oil in Australia, you'll find that virtually every Australian household has a bottle of it. Especially with recent clinical trials confirming the efficacy of Tea Tree oil’s anti fungal, antiseptic, germicidal and anti-bacterial properties providing head to toe antiseptic skin care.
Tea Tree oil can be used undiluted on the skin, is non-toxic and non-irritating.
The antiseptic benefits of the oil allow its use as an effective natural household cleaner and disinfectant.
